Yasser Ashraf Gandomi

I am currently a Senior Battery Scientist working at the intersection of electrochemistry, mechanical, and thermal engineering from small-scale reactors to large-scale multi-cell stacks for various electrochemical energy systems including lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), redox flow batteries (RFBs), polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and electrochemical sensors (ESs).

Priorly, I was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). I have received my PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee.

I) At MIT and the University of Tennessee, I have collaborated with peers on multiple projects funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR), MIT Energy Initiative (MITei), Volkswagen, and several other companies (e.g. W. L. Gore and Associates & Kraton).

II) The central theme of my research has been focused on the investigation of mass and heat transport processes in electrochemical systems including redox flow batteries (RFBs), lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEFCs), microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and electrochemical sensors (ESs). (Further details)

III) I instruct several courses (e.g. Fluid Mechanics and Engineering Mechanics) within the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee. (Further details)

IV) I collaborate with the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy (IJHE) as an Assistant Subject Editor. (Further details)

V) I am a contributing author and editor for the International Association for Hydrogen Energy’s e-newsletter. (Further details)

VI) Prior to enrolling in the PhD program, I received a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (with a concentration in Thermal-Fluid Sciences) along with a minor in computational sciences from the University of Tennessee.

VII) I also hold a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Solid Mechanics concentration with a focus on the design and structural analysis (elasticity, plasticity and buckling)) from the University of Tabriz.

Research Area & Interests

I have expertise in design, mathematical modeling, and prototyping different electrochemical energy devices including redox flow batteries (RFBs), lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and electrochemical sensors (ESs).

I am interested to address grand challenges in the Energy-Water-Environment nexus.

Further details regarding my technical experience and skillset is available in TECH. EXP. page and about my research experience and interests are avaialble in RESEARCH page.

Projects' Funding

At EESCL, I have collaborated with peers on multiple projects funded by Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Volkswagen, and several other companies (e.g. W. L. Gore and Associates).

In addition, I have gained invaluable experiences in writing grants and mentoring younger students.

The results of my research have been published in several peer-reviewed journal and proceeding papers. Comprehensive list of my publications is available in PUBLICATIONS page.

In addition, my research has resulted in several invention disclosures (More details are available in PATENTS page. )

Teaching Experience
In addition to my research experiences, I have also developed a solid teaching experience. I have served as a sole course instructor for several courses (i.e. Fluid Mechanics and Engineering Mechanics) at University of Tennessee (please see more at TEACHING EXP. page)

Editorial Experience

I collaborate with the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy (IJHE) as an Assistant Subject Editor.

I am also a contributing author and editor for the International Association for Hydrogen Energy’s e-newsletter. IAHE e-newsletter is published 6 times per year and sent to over 8,000 scientists and engineers worldwide. In addition, I have been fortunate to serve as a reviewer for a number of journals. Further information is available in EDITORIAL EXP. page.

Leadership Experience & Membership
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has a local chapter at University of Tennessee. I have served as the President at ASME student chapter for three consecutive years and lead a robotic design team at this chapter. In addition, I am a member of 4 different honor societies and several other professional societies. Please read more about my leadership skillset at this page (PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES and MEMBERSHIPS).
