Yasser Ashraf Gandomi, PhD |
My expertise lies at the intersection of mechanical engineering and electrochemistry, spanning from small-scale reactors to large-scale multi-cell stacks. I specialize in various electrochemical energy systems, including redox flow batteries (RFBs), lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), electrolyzers, microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and electrochemical sensors (ESs).
I possess a deep understanding of the diverse materials and components that compose batteries and electrochemical cells, and how their interactions can influence cell performance. I actively drive the design and prototyping of cells to analyze their electrochemical and stability performance. I particularly enjoy pioneering failure mode analyses for these systems and constructing models to assess their performance and degradation mechanisms.
Priorly, I was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). I have received my PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee.
I) At MIT and the University of Tennessee, I have collaborated with peers on multiple projects funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR), MIT Energy Initiative (MITei), Volkswagen, Hyundai, and several other companies (e.g. W. Through a collaborative project between MIT and our international partners, we have developed novel lithium-conducting composite polymer−ceramic membranes for redox flow batteries. Here, we demonstrate that the ceramic compounds with NASICON-type crystal structure blended within the polyvinylidene fluoride polymeric matrix are promising composite membranes for lithium-based non-aqueous flow batteries.
Further details are available in our recently published paper ("Synthesis and Characterization of Lithium-Conducting Composite Polymer−Ceramic Membranes for Use in Nonaqueous Redox Flow Batteries") in "ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces".
