Rendering a Resistor Inspired Sunglass Case

Resistors come in many values. Their value is identified by the color bands on the side. Resistors have 3, 4 and 5 band versions that give the value and the tolerance around the nominal value. For this sunglass case a 3 band resistor was chosen and to add color to the design, a fourth band for tolerance was added in several of the renderings. The chart below shows how to read the color bands.

Since next year is the 150 year anniversary of MIT, the value for the resistor chosen was 150 ohm. The color combination for this value is brown, green, brown. This color combination is not very attractive, but unique to MIT in celebrating the 150 year anniversary and could have potential market share in the MIT museum for MIT affiliates to share in the celebration. Also, shown is a fourth band representing a 5% tolerance, this was added for enhanced color.

In order to make the color banding of the resistor sunglass case more visually appealing, the value was changed to 1.5 kohm. This is represented by brown, green, red. Visually this color combination is more attractive than brown, green, brown, but may have a slight disconnect from the 150 year anniversary of MIT. Also shown is a 5% tolerance rendering with a gold band.

An alternative approach to the MIT 150 year anniversary was to brand the resistor sunglass case as a 150 kohm resistor. This color combination is brown, green, yellow. The color combination is visually attractive, but may also suffer a slight disconnect from MIT 150 year celebration because of the resistor value. Market research will need to be conducted to determine the most desired color palette. For additional visual stimulation, a gold band was added representing a 5% tolerance resistor.

For purposes of rendering a final version of the resistor sunglass case for the MIT 150 year anniversary, a 150 ohm resistor was chosen. This color combination may not be the most visually exciting, but it most closely embodies the 150 year celebration. This design is unique to MIT and could be produced in quantities for the MIT museum shop, or for the alumni association. In addition, the three band design with brown, green, brown almost reads as MIT, as there are three letters in MIT and three bands. This was noticed when looking at the MIT logo on the MIT homepage.
