Identify produce before checking out

Produce causes the most problems when ringing up items because they do not have a barcode. One solution to this problem which I have seen in supermarkets in Asia is to have an attendant in the produce section issue labels for the produce. There would be a scale and a barcode label printer, similar to the ones they have at the deli center of the supermarket or the the sub sandwich area at LaVerdes.

Get rid of scanning completely

Convert completely to RFID techniques to identify goods. Instead of scanning each individual item, it would be nice to be able to just place all of the groceries in an enclosure where an RF reader would read and register all of the RF tags at once. Even better, one could use 'smart' shopping carts that would know exactly what was in the cart. The payment owed would be updated each time an item was added to the cart.
