The service elevator is a key plot element in connecting the above-ground tech. operations room with the underground service tunnel. The elevator can also be used to provide clues (via postings, wall graffiti, notices, speaker announcements, or guide speech) to what puzzles may lie ahead in the tunnel. The elevator will be located above a stairwell in the doorways between the tech. operations room and the service tunnel as shown in the storyboard. Given the space restrictions, a real elevator cannot be used. The Gromits have suggested and tested several means of simulating a service elevator descent using sketch models. Four sketch models were produced; A looks-like scaled model, a simulator of vertical accelerations, a scrolling wall illusion, and a special effects rig including sound, vibrations, and airflow.
