MIT Design Standards

The MIT Design Standards describe MIT’s expectations for new construction and renovation projects and were developed for use by teams working with MIT as well as MIT construction project managers. Any team working on these MIT projects (including architects, landscape architects, engineers, contractors, and equipment vendors) must comply with the requirements outlined in these Standards.

MIT periodically updates these Standards and welcomes feedback. Comments and questions may be sent to the Design Standards team.

The MIT Design Standards are organized into two major categories:

  • Thematic Folders include topics grouped by content (for example, lab design, residences, sustainability).
  • Specification Divisions include topics organized by work results (for example, fire protection, HVAC, electrical, utilities).

The full set of the current (2022) edition of the Design Standards can be accessed here as a single PDF or by individual chapters of the same content organized by the two major categories.
