In the battle of two of the top academic
schools in the country, MIT quickly proved superior on the
basketball court. With relentless man-to-man defense, MIT
got out in transition and was able to cash in on some easy
baskets and an 8-0 start. Freshman Mike
Huhs, Sophomore Andrew Tsai, Sophomore
Kyle Doherty, and freshman Adam
Gibbons had early baskets for the Engineers. Junior Stuart
Laval was a spark off the bench with several offensive
rebounds and easy layups. Junior captain Sebastian
Heersink and junior Boris Paskalev
also gave the Engineers strong play inside. Seeing time and
contributing were also freshman Luke
Haidorfer and freshman John Miller.
However, MIT struggled shooting the ball from the peremeter
and only led by only 18 going into halftime.
MIT again came old cold in the second half
but was able to capitalize with offensive rebounds and easy
layups. Key to the second half charge was junior captain Alex
Phillips who had several steals and points in transition.
Phillips was also key in pushing
the ball and finding several MIT players for wide-open layups.
Also playing well in the second half was junior captain Neal
Brenner who connected on a three-pointer and a couple
mid-range jumpers just inside the key. Although a little sluggish
after playing on consecutive nights, MIT was still able to
overpower Cal Tech and coast to another victory.
