Communications

Telesonar acoustic modems will be used for communication between the habitat and the submarine. Using these modems, no cables are required since it is a wireless form of communication and the strength of the signals is greatly enhanced as attenuation is reduced. These modems are able to transmit reliable and robust doppler corrected data over long ranges in any path. They allow for real-time command and control, acquiring data from sensors and adaptive sampling of images.

We will also install several omni directional hydrophones mounted on the outside of the vehicle to help in picking up signals and in transmission. The function of these hydrophones will be complemented by having modems that can be rotated related to the current vehicle position to ensure that some of the modems are in the direction of the habitat. The power required for the modems will be around 0.2-5W for the given size and this will be from batteries. The data interface that would be best is the RS-232.

The modem will integrate the capability of the beacon and it should be capable of operating as a homing beacon. This will enable synchronous acoustic navigation. These modems are produced by Benthos and adaptive versions of these are available in case we need to change. The modems will be operated by a computer with an embedded controller and this will work together with the computer in control of navigation for optimization.
