Navigation

Navigation is the key to being able to explore the vent using the vehicle. EVE will have a central computer in charge of all the navigation equipment to enhance the control and intergration of the different aspects that need to be dealt will. We will use modems for communication that are capable of intergrating beacon capability. Synchronous acoustic navigation will be used and this will involve the use of the modems and clocks or a surface expression for collection of GPS time signals.

The pilot of the vehicle will use Inertial Navigation system to tell the location of the vehicle at any one time. This will be important in determining the course of the vehicle and also it might help in being able to determine the position of the vehicle relative to the habitat so that the modems can be rotated accordingly. It will also be used for getting to know the specific region the vehicle is visiting and incase more samples are needed from there, it will be easier to get back.

The computer controlling navigation will have a program that keeps track of course, depth, speed, time and passive tonal changes. Due to the possibility of active sonar interrogations, the computer will be programmed to automatically deal with this. The computer will be powered from a rechargeable NiCd battery pack with a smart charging system. The computer will also be able to display, store and process all the above mentioned parameters.

We will use the Benthos Datasonics SIS-3000 Seafloor Imaging System that uses chirp acoustic technology with sensors to provide a survey platform. This in turn enhances side and sub-bottom scan capability. The Datasonic also has sensors including:

a) heading sonar
b) pitch and roll sonar
c) SIS-1500 side scan sonar
d) PSA-900 sonar altimeter
e) ESC-5020 electronic still camera
f) 383 high intensity electronic strobes

Other devices that will be used include

a) passive and active sonobuoys
b) communication buoys
c) target detection devices
d) acoustic underwater transducers
e) sonar navigation aides
