Exostructure

The pressure hull will be surrounded by a thin shell which is called the exostructure. The exostructure will be open to the surrounding water and so sea water can flow in and out of the exostructure freely. Therefore, it does not have to be very strong like the pressure hull, since water pressure acts on it from both its inside and outside. The reasons for having the exostructure include:

  • It is expensive to build a very huge titanium pressure hull which would fit everything. Therefore, items which can be placed outside EVE are put in the exostructure, which is made of a cheaper material.

  • The shape of the pressure is not very streamlined. The exostructure would be a cylinder whose ends are shaped like cones. This makes EVE much more streamlined, which saves power (less power is wasted overcoming drag) and at the same time, increases the submersible’s speed.

  • Items such as thrusters and variable water ballast should naturally be put outside. The exostructure provides a framework to put such items outside.
