6. PC-DOS execute command ALT-C

6.0 Overview

PC-PLOT-IV provides a method which you can run another PC-DOS program while you are still running PC-PLOT-IV. This section describes how to utilize the PC-DOS execute command.

6.1 Using the PC-DOS execute command

While you are running PC-PLOT-IV, you can run a new copy of the PC-DOS command interpreter (COMMAND.COM) and execute any PC-DOS command. To shift back into PC-DOS temporarily, enter the ALT-C command from the keyboard. The PC-DOS command prompt ( A> or C> ) will then appear at the bottom of the screen.

You can then run any PC-DOS command ( DIR, ERASE, CHKDSK, etc.) or run another program such as a text editor, spreadsheet, or any other program which will not reset the communications channel.

NOTE: You should not try to FORMAT a diskette while PC-PLOT-IV is running in the background because the interrupt-driven data from your host may interfere with the formatting operation.

While you are running the second application, any data that is received from the serial port (modem) is being saved in the input buffer of PC-PLOT-IV so that it will be visible when you return.

As soon as you have completed running the PC-DOS application programs, you can then re-enter PC-PLOT-IV by typing the command EXIT at the PC-DOS prompt. The screen will then clear and the PC-PLOT-IV on-line prompt will appear. Any data sent to the serial port while you were in the application program will appear on the screen.
