8. Telephone Directory

8.0 Overview

PC-PLOT-IV can store up to 16 telephone numbers in a telephone directory which can be automatically sent to your modem. This section describes how to set up and use the autodial feature. This feature is separate from the second method of automatically dialing a phone number using a script which is covered in section 14.

8.1 Setting up / editing your telephone directory

Depressing the ALT-P command from the keyboard will bring up the telephone directory edit screen.

To select an item in the menu, use the cursor up/down keys to move the wide cursor bar. Move the cursor to the item to be modified and enter a letter, number, or character string.

The first line in the menu is the letter assigned to the telephone number.   Since there can be up to 16 numbers defined, the letters are from A-P. The second line of the menu is the terminal number that is to be activated when this telephone number is dialed. There are up to eight terminal setups that can be defined using the ALT-S command (1-8). This feature allows you to set up a specific terminal setup for one host at 300 baud and another at 1200 baud and switch between the two when you dial them using the autodial feature.

The third line in the menu is a name which you assign to the telephone number. The fourth line is the actual telephone number which you will want to dial. The example telephone number is for a Hayes Smartmodem which will enter a short pause when a comma is sent as part of a telephone number.   The 9„ 16142811111   is an example of dialing 9 to get an outside line, waiting for two seconds for another dial tone, and then dialing the long distance number 1+614-281-1111.

The fifth line is a logon sequence which will be sent when you enter the ALT-L
command after you have used the autodial feature. In order to imbed a <cr> in the logon sequence, substitute a tilde ( - ), in order to imbed a control character, precede the letter key with a carat ( ^ ), and to insert a delay, insert the vertical bar character ( I ). Do not mix up the special control characters used in the logon string with the special control characters used by your smart modem-they are different.

As soon as you have entered all of the data in your telephone directory, enter an ALT-S command to save your new entries in the file PCPLOT.SET.

If you want to view the contents of your your directory entries, you can either use an ALT-A command to display all of them or an ALT-P command to display them individually. Select the entry to view by entering a letter from A to P while the cursor is on the top line of the menu.

8.2 Using directory to autodial

To use the entries put in the telephone directory for autodialing, enter an ALT-A command from the keyboard. The complete telephone directory will be listed and you will be prompted to enter a letter corresponding to the number to dial. If you wish to view the directory only and then exit back to on-line mode, simply hit <cr>.

Entering a letter and then a <cr> will cause the current modem dialing string (from the ALT-V menu) to be sent to the Smartmodem followed by the complete telephone number that is listed in the directory. If your setup is proper, you will see the screen clear, the online message will appear, and then the complete telephone number string will appear on the top line of the screen. After the number appears, you should hear the dial tone, dialing tones, ringing of the remote line, and the carrier tone sent by the answering modem from the speaker in your modem. As soon as the modem detects the carrier tone from the host, the message CONNECT will appear on your screen.

At this point, you are connected to your host. If you have saved a logon string in the telephone directory, you can send it now by entering an ALT-L command.
