7 : Download Data to Your Local Machine

STEP 1:
Perform a basic or advanced search to find the data layer in which you are interested.

STEP 2:
Use the results dialog to add a selected layer to your ArcView or ArcGIS map.

STEP 3:
In ArcView use the select tool to select the region of the file in which you are interested. In ArcGIS, you may select a smaller area using the select tool, but you don't need to make a selection in order to save the data to your local machine.

STEP 4:
In ArcView go to Theme> Convert to Shapefile; then save the file to your local machine. This file is now on your machine; don't forget to save a copy of the metadata. In ArcGIS, right click on the layer name in the table of contents; click on Data, then Export Data.
