LNS manages 4 vehicles that are used to support the research efforts of its members. These vehicles, listed below, are used to travel to Bates and run local business-related errands, as well as travel across the country to other institutions in support of LNS research efforts. Usage of gas is paid for by the driver’s group. Drivers who receive tickets, fines and citations are personally responsible for payments. The LNS General Services team manages reservations and maintenance of all LNS vehicles.
Per MIT’s Automobile Use Policy, an individual driver must provide authorization for a motor vehicle record (MVR) check. MVR checks must be done prior to a person being eligible to drive an LNS-owned or controlled vehicle. To request an MVR check, please email Caitlin Sulham (csulham@mit.edu) or Karen Dow (kdow@mit.edu). MVR checks are completed electronically (via Creative Services); however, they can still be completed in-person, although it can take longer to process. In your email, let Karen/Caitlin know which method you prefer.
Changes effective March 1, 2023
International licenses - Certain international driver’s licenses are acceptable in the Commonwealth of MA. This URL provides information on driving in Massachusetts with a foreign license. If you have a foreign license, inform Caitlin/Karen of this in your email for an MVR check.
Physical damage - at fault accidents in LNS-managed vehicles will result in driver responsibility for the $2,500 deductible (personal vehicle insurance is unlikely to supersede). If you have questions or concerns regarding deductible coverage, please see Caitlin Sulham or Karen Dow. See Office of Insurance- accidents for more information.
All drivers are required to agree to conditions set by MIT's Vehicle Use Policy and MIT's Best Practice for Vehicle Use. See General Services for more information.
