How do I...?

Sexual Violence | If you have been assaulted in the past five days | How to help a friend | Reporting | Resources for students

Resources for students

There are many resources available to you on and off campus, ranging from medical care, counseling, and legal services, to law enforcement, housing, and academic services.

Can I get help without MIT being involved?
If you would prefer not to have MIT involved, there are many resources available to you in the Boston area: Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence, Victims Rights Law Center, Fenway Community Health Center (LGBT services), and The Network/La Red (617-423-SAFE (7233)) (LBT women's services).

You may choose to seek assistance from, or report an assault to, MIT at any time.

Can I get care at MIT Medical?
If you would like to see a clinician at MIT Medical, you may do so. If the assault has happened in the last five days, you should see a clinician as soon as possible. Clinicians at MIT Medical may refer you to the sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) site if the assault has occurred in the last five days. Urgent Care at MIT Medical is open 24 hours a day. You may also make an appointment with your primary care clinician.

MIT Medical offers a full range of services including OB/GYN exams, pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, emergency contraception, and antibiotics. MIT Medical does not have evidence collection kits.

If you would like to have evidence collected, you must go to a SANE site where nurses specially trained to treat victims of sexual assault provide OB/GYN services, evidence collection, emergency contraception, antibiotics, and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing.

Campus police are also available to escort you from MIT Medical to a SANE site in an unmarked car, if available. You do not have to file a report in order to receive an escort. After you have been treated, campus police will also escort you home or to a safe location. If you choose not to involve campus police, MIT Medical may provide taxi vouchers to transport you to a SANE site.

You will not be billed for any services at MIT Medical related to sexual assault.

Where can I get counseling and support?
Many resources offer counseling and support to sexual assault survivors. On-campus resources include Mental Health; Student Support Services; Nightline (617-253-8800), a peer listening hotline available 7 p.m.-7 a.m. during school semesters; and MedLinks, residence-based peer helpers.

Off campus resources include the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence, Fenway Community Health Center, and The Network/La Red.

What if I want to change my housing situation?
If you would like to change your living situation due to an assault or harassment, you may contact Student Support Services.

Can I take time off from my classes or academic work?
Yes. If you feel that taking time off is appropriate and what you need to do, Student Support Services can assist you with the process and any questions you may have.

24-hour emergency care

SANE nurses are specially trained in caring for persons raped or sexually assaulted. If you go to any of the listed SANE sites, a nurse will be contacted by the Emergency Department staff, as will a medical advocate from BARCC. If you choose to go to MIT Medical, they may refer you to a SANE site.
