Three female PhD students in the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science design and teach the Women's Technology Program classes in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Discrete Math.
Sarah Finney
Computer Science Instructor
Hometown: Lawrence , Kansas
I am a seventh-year PhD student in the Computer
Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL). I am
interested in making complicated robots learn from previous experience
so they can be faster at generating motion plans in new situations.
Outside of my research life, I play the fiddle and do some running.
I grew up in Kansas, got my undergraduate degree at Brown University
in Rhode Island , and then worked as a software engineer at iRobot
Corp. for several years before coming back to school.
Tania Khanna

I am a third year PhD student in the Dawson
Research Group, where I
work on analog circuit and system optimization. I did my undergraduate
work at Cornell University . I've lived in many places all over North
America and love to travel around the world. I especially love to see
the natural beauties of the world because seeing really is believing.
I like to cook, read and be in the sun. I can't wait to see you all this
summer!
Laura Zager
Discrete Math Instructor
Hometown: Sayre , PA
I'm a fourth-year PhD student in the Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems, where I study mathematical models of ecology and epidemiology. I'm especially interested in how infectious diseases spread through networks of people, and how different kinds of public health strategies can impact a community and the environment. It might sound strange for a student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science to be studying ecology, but that's what I love about MIT - you're really encouraged to tackle problems which have applications in lots of different fields! The rest of the math staff and I will try to do the same thing this summer, and draw lots of examples of amazing math from many disciplines. Outside of the lab, I take glass-blowing lessons at MIT's very own glass lab, spent lots of time walking around Boston and Cambridge , and relax with family and friends. Looking forward to the summer!
Residential Tutors
Residential Tutors are female MIT undergraduate or MEng
students who assist the WTP-EECS Instructors in the classroom, and also
live in the dormitory with the high school students where they chaperone
residential life, create fun activities and field trips, and help with
homework.

Hi everybody! I was a WTP student myself back in 2005, and I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you and spending another summer at WTP. I realized that I wanted to major in computer science when I was in 5th grade and I decided that I wanted to write video games when I grew up; I've since realized that there is much more to computer science than just writing games or other software applications, and I hope to get involved in some interesting research projects in the not-so-distant future. Beyond computer science, my interests include Tae Kwon Do, singing, knitting, reading, and I'm trying to learn how to play the guitar. See you this summer!

I am thrilled to be spending the summer in Boston and plan to explore the city a lot.

Hi everyone! I'm currently finishing up my M.Eng (Master's of Engineering) degree at MIT, having finished my Bachelor's degree last year. My research is in data visualization and database systems. I'm originally from southern California , but after five years here in Boston , I'm pretty used to the wacky weather and Red Sox mania =). However, I'll be returning to the west coast later this year, when I start my full-time job with Microsoft. Some activities I've been involved with while at MIT include: doing layout for The Tech, the student newspaper; singing with Resonance, a co-ed a capella group; being an official MIT tour guide; and doing lots of things with my sorority, Alpha Chi Omiga. I even got to live right near Fenway Park for two years in my sorority house - I was there when the Red Sox won the World Series! I love music, watching Gilmore Girls and/or House, and random geeky things, and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and having a great time this summer!

Hi Girls! I am so excited to be an EE tutor
this summer for WTP, and to meet intelligent women who are aspiring engineers.
I am currently a sophomore, and have just begun on a long and exciting
track in EECS whose end is unknown to even myself. In addition to my computer
science and EE classes, I enjoy the bio classes that I am enrolled in and
hope to make a minor out of that. I am a swimmer and a runner, and in my
high school days the saxophone and the piano found time into my schedule
as well. As a first year WTP-er, I look forward to a great summer!

I'm currently finishing my Masters of Engineering on synthetic biology. When I'm not working on my thesis, I can be found playing with my cats, hunting down out of print books, and attempting to cook. I've lived in Boston for 5 years now, and know the location of every used bookstore in walking distance, and a handful that aren't. I read mostly scifi and fantasy, and the occasional good 19th century children's literature. I look forward to meeting you.

Hey everyone! I'm really excited about this summer, and I can't wait to meet all of you. Right now I'm in my senior year, majoring in Mathematics with Computer Science. Outside of classes, I compete for the MIT Women's Cross Country, Indoor, and Outdoor Track teams. I also get involved with community service through my sorority. After this summer, the company I've been hired to flies me to Europe to live in London for about two and a half months. There, I'm completing first year global markets analyst training before I move to Manhattan to start my full time job, using my degree on Wall Street. I love running along the Charles River, shopping on Newbury Street, dancing, baking cookies, watching movies, and (of course) math!

I'm a senior in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. This is my third year as a CS Tutor for WTP, so you can tell I really enjoy the program! When I was a junior in high school I took a Computer Science class and fell in love, so I hope I can share that experience with some of you. In my free time I like to write, to read, and to teach; this spring I've been teaching a Creative Writing class for middle/high school students. I also like to watch movies; I'm a former projectionist for LSC. The last two years I've shown a bunch of movies in the dorm, and I'm sure this summer will be no exception. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and having a great time!
Residential Assistants
Residential Assistants live in the dorm and help with evening and weekend activities, but do not have classroom or tutoring responsibilities. These women students are rising sophomores who all attended WTP when they were in high school.

guys. I did WTP back in 2005, and I had so much fun, that I'm doing
it again! :o) I'm a very confused little freshman and I have no idea
what I'll be majoring in, though Electrical Engineering is a likely
choice. Some of
the many activities I've taken part in at MIT include Women's Lacrosse,
doing advertising for MIT's school newspaper, Tech, holding lots of
different events with consultants from consulting firms, and participating
in a Culture show for South Asian American Students. I'm generally
very spontaneous and like to live in the moment. I assure you that
you'll have a great time at WTP!

Hi girls! I was a WTP student in 2005, and I had an incredible time, so I'm really excited to meet all of you wonderful girls this summer :-) Although I'm an Architecture major, I designed and built a robot this IAP for MIT's Mobile Autonomous Systems Laboratory competition and am thinking about taking several MechE, EECS, or Aero/Astro classes. Apart from design, I also enjoy blacksmithing, metal-casting, and just building things in general. I rowed for MIT Crew this year, and I love spandex, reading, shopping, cooking, and just chilling and talking to people. Hi!!! I'm really looking forward to this summer. I attended WTP in 2005 and I absolutely loved it. WTP is actually one of the reasons I came to MIT. I am a freshman this year and I just declared Course 9 (Brain and Cognitive Sciences). However, I still love EECS. My Electricity and Magnetism class is one of my favorite classes this semester. Outside of classes, I enjoy singing, eating, watching movies, acting, and shopping. I know we will have fun this summer = D I look forward to meeting all of you!!!!!

PhD Student in Mechanical Engineering

Dawn will continue her academic-year role as a GRT in McCormick Hall
through the summer. She is trained in conflict resolution, helping
students adjust to college life, and navigating the MIT healthcare
system. Dawn Wendell is a second-year PhD student in mechanical engineering.
She has a Bachelor and Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from
MIT. Dawn was instrumental in developing the curriculum and teaching
the WTP-ME inaugural summer of 2006. This year she is looking forward
to meeting all 60 WTP students in her role as GRT in the dorm. For hobbies,
Dawn builds robots and does craft projects (most recently, knitting).
