Description

This research focuses on infrared (R) light generation, its processing and detection for enabling optical components to be monolithically integrated for telecommunications and sensing applications. Specifically the research comprises the design, fabrication and characterization of a mid-IR semiconductor laser with wide operating wavelength tenability, advanced filtering and optical signal routing and processing, development of an optical sensing head for chemical sensing and the final detection of optical signals.

Relevance

This research has global impact in diverse fields of science and engineering, in addition to a valuable impact on regional and global economies.

The research is relevant to Masdar and to Abu Dhabi because it aims at developing the necessary skills for a knowledge-based economy in the region, forming skilled individuals with sound research with global impact. Vectors of development (1) and (2) above suit well with the university's mission of sustainable energy innovation and deployment as well as the region's effort in creating a strong semiconductor industry.
