Description

Scientists are looking for novel ways to extract alternative energy from renewable natural sources and recycle energy when possible. Photovoltaics (PV) can be used to convert solar energy to electricity. This PV research focuses on novel thin film photovoltaics, extending the path to single crystal and new materials to optimize the wavelength range for absorption of radiation and to improve overall efficiency. The goal is to experimentally demonstrate and study high quality crystalline thin film single and multi-junction solar cells incorporating Ge/SiGe/Si.

Relevance

Research in this specific area of PV technology is currently in its infancy,
the research impact can be very significant. The novelty of the research will educate students to be innovators and to grow technology and enterprise in the region and globally. Finally, research into alternative energy sources is of vital interest to Masdar Institute and Abu Dhabi at large, due to the inevitable decline in standard energy sources so vital to their economy.
