SMA offers four dual degree programmes:

  • Advanced Materials for Micro- and Nano-Systems (AMM&NS)
  • Computational Engineering (CE)
  • Manufacturing Systems and Technology (MST)
  • Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering (CPE)

The first three were launched in July 2005 while the last was launched in July 2006. Each dual degree programme offers three degree tracks except for the CPE programme, which offers two degree tracks.

Dual Masters

The Dual Masters track is an intensive one-and-a-half-year programme conducted in both Boston and Singapore, and comprises a well-balanced synthesis of course-work and multi-disciplinary projects. As these practice-based projects require collaboration between students and their project supervisors, the industry benefits from the work and expertise of the students once they enter the workplace.

Students are awarded two Masters degrees at the end of the programme: one from MIT and the other from either NUS or NTU, depending on the Singapore university hosting the programme.

Master-PhD

The Master-PhD track is a five-year programme leading to an MIT Masters degree and an NUS or NTU PhD degree, depending on the Singapore university that the main Thesis Advisor is affiliated to. Its course-work component is similar to those of the Dual Masters degrees but comprises additional specialisation courses as well as a major research component.

Direct-PhD

The Direct-PhD track requires approximately four years to complete, and comprises both course-work and research components. The doctoral research projects are formulated through consultation with MIT and Singapore faculty members, and are undertaken for their relevance and potential benefit to research in Singapore and the region.

The dual degree programmes will lead to the award of one of the following degrees:

  • An MIT Masters and an NUS/NTU Masters
  • An MIT Masters and an NUS/NTU PhD
  • An NUS/NTU PhD degree with SMA Certificate
