8.323 :: Quantum Field Theory I

Lecture Notes and Slides

Lecture Notes #1: Quantization of the Free Scalar Field, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Notes #1 and Lecture Slides #1 have the same subject. In the original versions they had the same equations, although the Slides were revised on 2/21/08 and the Notes have not been. The Notes have more words, and are intended to be read as an independent document. The Slides are intended for classroom use, with fewer words since they will be supplemented by a running sound track. You should not expect such multi-format coverage for all topics, but it will happen occasionally.

Lecture Notes #2: Notes on the Euler-Maclaurin Summation Formula,
as PS | PDF | 2up PS | 2up PDF.

Lecture Notes #3: Informal Notes on Distributions and the Fourier Transform,
as PS | PDF | 2up PS | 2up PDF.

Lecture Notes #4: Informal Notes Dirac Delta Function as a Distribution,
as PS | PDF | 2up PS | 2up PDF.

Lecture Notes #5: Quantum Mechanics and Path Integrals,
as PS | PDF | 2up PS | 2up PDF.

Lecture Notes #6: Path Integrals, Green's Functions, and Generating Functions,
as PS | PDF | 2up PS | 2up PDF.

Lecture Slides #1: Quantization of the Free Scalar Field, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #1 were revised on 2/21/08, and the revised version is linked above. Some typos were corrected, and the treatment of the harmonic oscillator was changed to more closely parallel the treatment of scalar field theory. For historians, the earlier version is still available here, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #2: Particle Production by a Classical Source (Part II, incomplete), in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #3: The Dirac Field, Part I, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #3 were revised on 5/6/08, correcting Eq. (55). The revised version is linked above, and for historians the earlier version is still available here, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #4: The Dirac Field, Part II, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #5: The Dirac Field, Part III: Dirac Equation, Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, Weyl Fields, Propagator, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #6: Discrete Symmetries of the Dirac Field, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #6 were revised on 5/8/08, correcting a number of typos. The revised version is linked above, and for historians the earlier version is still available here, in PS or PDF. In addition, some extra slides were shown in class on Thursday 5/8/08, on the canonical anticommutation relations, Dirac hole theory, and the Dirac propagator. Those slides, called Lecture Slides 6A, can be found here, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #7: Interacting Field Theories, in PS or PDF.

Lecture Slides #7A: Interacting Field Theories (Executive Summary Version), in PS or PDF.

Despite its name, the "Executive Summary Version" actually includes all the slides in the original version, plus a few more.
