We went to different markets today. I chose to go to Marché aux Puces (the flea market), which is just outside of the city. I was not disappointed. In fact, I spent 3 hours there (while I could have easily spent the whole afternoon). But, in those three hours I met a French hatter who makes hats for French movies and was offering me a D’Artagnan hat for a bargain price of 75 euros (it is a bargain considering the prices of costumes lately).
I also found an old bookstore where the owner led me into a room filled with first edition books. He then let me look through and read the first edition of my favourite book, La Dame de Monsoreau by Alexandre Dumas, even though he knew that I was not going to buy it. His reason was: “You study French. You like the literature. Here, have a treat.” It was most definitely a treat and a privilege.
I held in my hands a 15th century rapier; I tried on hats; I held in my hands 19th century tomes, with their pages lined with gold. I have discovered the hidden treasures of Paris.
