$SumMIT and its History

Select from these topics: Basics, Current version, and History.

$SumMIT Basics

$SumMIT's main purpose is to provide user friendly access to data residing on the MITVMA and MITVMC mainframes. As of June 1999, only SumMIT's payroll (E-Time, ESandi) and property (SumProp) applications maintain current data. (Click here for a diagrammatic overview of $SumMIT.)

$SumMIT employs "client server" architecture (the data resides on a mainframe, but the application runs on your workstation) and takes advantage of many workstation features (for example, windows, pulldown and popup menus, your mouse, and color).

$SumMIT reports can be "exported" for use in spreadsheets and word processors or printed on your local printer.

Current Version of $SumMIT

In the latest version of SumMIT (v4.60), SumMIT, ESandi, ETime, and SumProp have been made compatible with the latest Oracle software.

$SumMIT with Oracle is available for Mac G3 and G4 and Windows XP pro and 2000 pro.

$SumMIT History

In its initial release, $SumMIT was a financial reporting application consisting of Hierarchical, Ad hoc, Accounts menu, and General Ledger reports. Note: To get info about main menu options, you can click on the buttons on the $SumMIT menu, shown above.

In $SumMIT v3.0n, the financial reporting options were bundled with the Journal Voucher and Telecommunications systems.

In v3.2n, the Special Reports menu became available to $SumMIT users with department-wide access to accounts data.

In v4.0n, two Payroll-related systems were added: E-Time for entering support staff, service staff, and student timesheets and ESandi, an electronic SANDI system. In addition, the tool QuickLook was added to the Accounts menu. With v4.0, you can graph all hierarchical, ad hoc, and accounts menu reports.

$SumMIT v4.1 includes SumProp, a property reporting system. $SumMIT 4.15 incorporates the new calculations of overhead on fund accounts and enhancements to QuickLook.

In v4.16, $SumMIT adds QuickGroup to the Accounts menu. An enhancement to QuickLook enables you to forecast staff salaries based on average month expenses. E-Time now requires you to assign the new object codes 318 and 319 (project support staff, on- and off-campus) when support staff salaries are charged to research accounts.

$SumMIT v4.17 offers Research Receivables, which you can use to display current or historical data (including outstanding balances) on invoices sent to sponsors.

With $SumMIT v4.18, you could use E-Time to enter and approve regular payroll vouchers and review, print, or export data for historical vouchers filed electronically. Note: As of June 2005, you can only review history of regular payroll vouchers.

In v4.19, when running Hierarchical or Ad hoc reports, you can display dollars by individual research sponsor; v4.19 also tries to fix a numbering problem in E-Time vouchers.

$SumMIT v4.20 takes much of its month-in-progress ("daily") data from SAP; addresses some bottleneck issues in ESandi and eliminates the need to reenter your Eudora userid/password; adds "export" capability to Telecom; and adds the "Alternate FY" report to the General Ledger menu.

With v4.21, $SumMIT runs under Windows 95 and NT with CAO-provided "patches". In addition,

  • ESandi provides access to data for multiple departments from a single userid.
  • Telecom reports on phone detail by department.
  • General Ledger menu gives access to detail transactions at ANY time of month.
  • Ad hoc reports on current data, when run "by supervisor by dept", display dollars for the selected, or all, depts.
  • QuickGroup Spending "drill down" reports include more chart data.
  • $JV rejects negative dollar amounts and applies new edit rules for some object codes.
  • The Allocation Rate Table includes some history.

In v4.35, JV and Telecom become display only. With JV, you can display historical vouchers created in $SumMIT or on MITVMA. With Telecom, you can review current and historical phone charges. The General Ledger menu in v4.35 includes these additional reports: Dept volume (GL-46), General account (GL-54), Fund analysis (GL-62), and Market Value.

In v4.40, ESandi is "year 2000 compliant"; and general ledger reports categorize vacation accruals (object codes 412, 413) as Employee Benefits rather than Operating Expenses.

With v4.50, E-Time, ESandi, and SumProp are made more compatible with SAP. The Account field is expanded to 7 characters; and the Object Code field to 6 characters; the Object Code field now holds G/L accounts.

The final month of data available for running financial reports on the SumMIT main menu (including JV and Telecom) is 6/99. These functions are history only.
