Integrated Photonic Devices and Materials Group

Alexei Erchak was a member of Prof. Kolodziejski's research group from 1997 to 2002 earning a Ph.D. in 2002 from the Department of Material Science and Engineering. He conducted research in the use of 2D photonic crystals to increase the efficiency of optically pumped LED structures resulting in his Ph.D. thesis titled "Enhanced Performance of Optical Sources in III-V Materials Using Photonic Crystals." The 2D photonic crystal was etched into the upper cladding layer of an asymmetric GaAs based LED structure that resided on a low index aluminum oxide layer and a GaAs/AlGaAs distributed Bragg reflector. Enhancements on the order of 100x were measured at the resonant frequency of the photonic crystal. He is the Chief Technical Officer at Luminus Devices, which he founded.
